Tuesday Night Community Forum

Each Tuesday night from 6:30-8, Renaissance Academy hosts speakers, presenters, slide shows, and interesting people that share their expertise on a variety of topics, from education to ecology, wildlife to recreation.  Please join us at the school!

February 26- Summer Programs for Kids 4: Sports and Athletics:  Falcon Sports Camps, Colorado Springs Park & Rec and Nike Camp representatives will join us to discuss the sports available for students this summer. Your budding athlete will benefit from building healthy fitness habits as well as the sportsmanship component that is a focus in all of these organizations!

March 4th- Child & Public Safety in Colorado Springs 1: Drive Smart! Colorado Springs Drive Smart rep Mylie Gray will share safe driving tips and safety procedures for children in care seats. The whole family can learn something from this educational presentation.

March 11th- Child & Public Safety in Colorado Springs 2: Stranger Danger. Officer Dave Husted of the Colorado Springs Police Department will share neighborhood safety advice, specifically how to keep your kids safe in the community.  Bring your kids to this forum!!! Information shared at this forum will be geared towards younger children and families.

March 18th- Child & Public Safety in Colorado Springs 3: Internet Crimes Against Children. Sgt. Billy DeHart of the Colorado Springs Police Department has been educating parents about ICAC for several years.  This presentation has mature content and is open for adults/parents only! Parents MUST RSVP as this event requires a minimum of 25 attendees to run. Prepare yourself for an amazing presentation that may shock you!

April 1st- Gifted Education & Your Child 1: Early Identification of Giftedness. Renaissance Academy Director Clayanna Henry-Killing will give you the tools necessary for identifying your pre-kindergartener for giftedness. Learn about great resources in Colorado that can help you identify and meet the needs of your gifted child!

April 8th- Gifted Education & Your Child 2: Asperger’s in the Classroom & at HomeWhat is Asperger’s? And how can you help a child learn with these unique developmental disabilities? Hear what it is like to grow up with Asperger’s from the perspective of a parent who has it, Laura Harvey.

April 15th- Gifted Education & Your Child 3: Attention Deficit Disorder. Learn to track the symptoms of this commonly mis-diagnosed childhood disorder. Share ideas for addressing ADD at home and in the classroom.

April 22nd- Gifted Education & Your Child 4: No Child Left Behind? Speak with Renaissance teacher Shannon Holub, who works with gifted students, about how she addresses gifted needs in the classroom! Leave no gifted student behind by implementing these practical and inventive ideas!

April 29th- Gifted Education & Your Child 5: Alumni Panel Night. Ron Hamilton and Melinda Harder.

May 6th- Sustainable Education 1: Green Plans for Our Community. Come get ideas from Julie Ott about making your home and community more environmentally friendly!  Grassroots initiatives and easy practices to put in place at home, school or work!

May 13th-- Sustainable Education 2: Light’s Out 2008. Join Allison Daniell of Imagination Celebration & local high school student volunteers to learn about Colorado Spring’s involvement in an international ‘Light’s Out’ hour! Learn about Imagination Celebration’s “Earth Hour” success this March and how you can help next year. Bring the whole family to learn about this project’s exciting history!

May 20th-- Sustainable Education 3: Recycled Sandals! Artists Lauren Myers will show you how to make chaco-style sandals using recycled tires and webbing! Be green and make your summer footwear this year! Please call Renaissance Academy to RSVP for this forum to reserve materials no later than May 6th!

May 27th-- Sustainable Education 4: Earth Artists. Local artists will share slides of famous installation artists who create massive works of art in the outdoors! Following the presentation, join your presenters on Renaissance Academy’s property to create your own Earth Art!
