Common Myths

MYTH: You are only gifted if you have an IQ of at least 130.

We use more than just a number to determine giftedness.  We seek to find many gifts that children have, and gather information from a variety of sources, some of which include: lengthy class visits, information from the student, family, prior school settings and any other professionals that might add relevant information to our pool of knowledge. Using these highly divergent methods to gain an understanding of a student, we can best assess whether they will thrive in our setting.

Furthermore, providing a description of a gifted learner is extremely difficult due to the wide variety of characteristics that can combine in a myriad of ways. When we try to describe our students we are faced with an unsolvable puzzle of personalities and learning styles.  We believe not only in the diversity of students, but also that student diversity is integral to the learning process itself.

MYTH: The Renaissance Academy only serves a limited, highly homogeneous, gifted and talented student.

Our student body represents a diverse selection of society and does not fit conveniently into any one category. Yes, some of our students came to Renaissance Academy because their previous school failed to meet their educational needs, but most students were attracted to Renaissance Academy for its small, challenging and individualized classrooms.

Unfortunately, because schools often rely upon a single methodology that works well for a majority of their students, they fail to meet the diverse needs of our young. We believe that with our unique, integrated curriculum, inclusive school philosophy, small classroom size, and dynamic faculty, we can meet both the needs of students who typically succeed in school as well as the needs of some students who have failed in their previous schools.
