As with any school, our families "grapple" with work schedules, understanding the developmental phases that their children go through, step-parenting, strategies that allow individuality while maintaining a solid parental presence, power struggles, etc. As a community of parents, instructors, and students, we create as many opportunities as possible to define and align goals between parents and students, partner with our instructors to share goals and define classroom strategies that will help children accomplish these goals, and learn from one another. There is a significant range in the level of parental involvement in the school, as well. Our RenPac organization is for parents who help bring a bit of the home into the school. It sponsors several international luncheons where parents can eat lunch with their children. Also, RenPac creates a holiday fair where children can do their holiday shopping for their families here at school. During the younger years, some parents volunteer in the classroom to help individual children during math or reading. Other parents prefer to join the class on field trips. In the older divisions, many of our parents have been guest speakers. We have incredible resources right in our own "family!" All in all, each family supports its scholar in its own individual way. Renaissance places no requirement on families regarding their involvement in the school. All of our families, however, are highly involved with their children and their growing developmental needs. |
